While our country becomes increasingly more diverse Hip Hop music it seems is becoming incredibly whitewashed.
What does it mean when black Rap and Hip Hop artists are continually overlooked by the mainstream- while white artists who appropriate black cutlure- are celebrated as the savior of entire genres of music?
LISTEN: The Gentrification of Hip Hop
In last week’s Politini episode: The Gentrification of Hip Hop we discussed the gentrification and whitewashing of today’s mainstream hip-hop. And the question was posed: So if not mainstream artists, who should we be listening to?
Our guest Hip Hop Historian, writer and educator, Sebastien Elkouby, gave a few suggestions of current emcees to listen to.
Check out some of the artists Sebastein recommended we check out (half of them female!) who are keeping hip-hop alive and fresh:
Sa-Roc: True Mastery
Ill Camille: Let You Know
Rapsody: The Drums (feat. Heather Victoria, The Soul Council)
Supastition: Best Worst Day
Oddisee: Own Appeal
Lastly, we can’t forget the music of our Polinista of the Week, Angel Haze! Fresh off her first EP, Classik, here are some of her tracks we played during the show:
Gossip Folks
Werkin Girls
Bad Bitch
Drunk In Love (Cover)
