Politini Recap: Laverne Cox joins us for Scandal Watch DC kick-off
Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s hit show Orange is the New Black, kicked off Scandal Watch DC on Thursday with married DC Politicos and Co-Hosts of Politini talk show, Aisha & Danielle Moodie-Mills. The event, framed around the hit ABC show Scandal, brought together top Washington operatives and cultural influencers for a live-audience taping of Politini, the most popular talk show on blis.fm, followed by a screening of the season premier episode of Scandal.
Laverne Cox hit the red carpet to discuss the evolution of black female characters in television and film, including her own experience. She has been widely celebrated for making history as the first transgender woman with a starring role in a television series, for her portrayal of transgender prison inmate Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black.
Scandal Watch DC event tickets sold out within six hours, and a packed house welcomed Cox to “Poliwood”, as Washington, DC is playfully called. “Laverne’s attendance tonight was culturally transformative for us here in D.C. The crowd absolutely adores her!” said Aisha Moodie-Mills. Adds Danielle Moodie-Mills, “It is indeed powerful to have a transgender woman revered along with Kerry Washington [star of Scandal] and other trailblazing black actresses for portraying complex characters and defying stereotypes.”
