We should all say thank you to Todd Akin, Missouri’s Senate Republican nominee. We should send him cupcakes. His recent comments on rape: “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down” has captivated the media and forced the Republican Party to do something they hate—fess-up to the truth, and admit that they don’t trust women.
Not only do Republican’s not trust women to make decisions about their own bodies, but they also believe that women more times than not lie about rape. When Akin tried to clean up his mess he unearthed another truth—above all else Republicans will fight for the unborn. Will Republicans fight for contraception for women? No. How about cancer screening for women? No. Maybe, equal pay for women? No. But my God, you put an unborn child in the equation than they will do whatever it takes for the health and welfare of their personhood—and then completely ignore their needs once the mother makes her final push and delivers.
The Republican bosses (Limbaugh, Hannity, Romney et al.) as Akin says, are trying to force him out of the race—demanding that he go quietly into the night and take his rape ideology with him. More importantly, they want women to stop paying attention to these pesky media reports and go back to knitting and making sandwiches for our more knowledgeable husbands. *rolls eyes*
Paul Ryan may be trying to play the younger- hip- brother to Romney’s robotic persona, but the reality is that this heart-beat-away Vice Presidential candidate is a carbon copy of Akin.
Ryan cosponsored Akin’s “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act”, which would prohibit federal funding of abortions except in instances of “an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest.” Giving the government the right to decide whether a woman being sexually assaulted against her will was “forcible rape” or not. Is this the Republican’s idea of small government?
Regardless of whether Akin withdraws from the Missouri senate race or not, his stance on abortion is the Party’s platform: “Faithful to the ‘self-evident’ truths enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed.”
Yes, you’re reading this correctly—there is NO exception for rape, incest, or endangerment of the mother’s life clause anywhere in the GOP’s platform. So, why give Akin the boot? He’s just spewing the truth he knows, and one the Republican Party clearly agrees with. When it comes to women’s bodies, and our right to protect or mental and physical health—Republican MEN know best.
Remember the story of the teenage Dominican girl who just died of cancer because authorities were caught up deciding whose life was more valuable, hers or the 16 week fetus inside of her. Many may have been horrified or even outraged by the fate of this young woman but then soothed their anger with phrases such as “that would never happen in America”. Except for just one little detail, it is happening. Republican controlled states have all but wiped out women’s health clinics and done everything within their legislative power to ban abortion out right. Forcing women, namely those that are poor or low income to skip work and try and find transportation to get the help and health screening they need some 8 hours or more away from home. These Republican legislators are so consumed with the life of the unborn; they are blind to the needs of the living.
They may be trying desperately to erase our rights, but we have a choice—to use our voice and our vote!
They can only take away our rights with our consent, and not voting is just the green light they need. This election isn’t between two candidates, it’s between two very distinct ideologies—one that believes in the rights of ALL people and the other that believes in rights for some—namely, wealthy, white, God-fearing men.
So, make your choice…before they make it for you!
