‘Tis the Season to Find Your TRUE JOY!

So, I will be the first to admit that I’ve been slow to catch the “holiday cheer” bug— although, I am a sucker for twinkling lights, poinsettias and anything that sparkles. I could blame my lack of cheer to this pre-apocalyptic warm weather we’re having or the Republicans (they are responsible for most things *wink*) but mainly it’s me.

I’ve had to remind myself that the holiday is about more than just stuff. Whether you’re getting more stuff or giving stuff…the holiday is so BEYOND all that. Instead of celebrating all that has been wonderful and transpired this year…I’ve been dwelling on the “what-ifs” and the “should’ve”.

Do you remember that line in SATC when Carrie asks “why are we shoulding all over ourselves”? I remember hearing that for the first time and thinking…how brilliantly true!

We spend so much time telling ourselves all of the things we should be doing or shouldn’t be doing that we actually miss out on what’s happening right in front of us. For the end of 2011 instead of spending time avoiding mirrors because I “should’ve gone to the gym all year” or complaining about lack of holiday funds because “I should’ve been saving”… I’m going to enjoy and be grateful for all of the wonderful things that made my heart shine this year.

And just so I don’t forget I made a list and checked it twice:

Joy 1. Despite my neurosis my wife is still madly in love with me…and I with her *smile*

Joy 2. My family will be together for Christmas…even if through Skype!

Joy 3. Our wedding photos and story won a GLAAD 2011 award reminding others that their love IS visible!

Joy 4. Spent my birthday in Paris

Joy 5. Strengthened old friendships and made some fabulous new ones!

Joy 6. Started threeLOL.com and connected with some amazing people *smile*

Joy 7. Started planning to expand our family!!!!!

If you’re like me and struggling to find your holiday mojo then make a list and remind yourself about all the joy 2011 brought you and even better…all of the glory that 2012 has in store. So, my dear readers cheers to the closing of another chapter….

The best is yet to come!

And if making a list isn’t enough to “Lift” your spirits…I know a little jam that can!
