Snap Out of It!

Summer generally brings out the inner warrior in us… we’re hiking, biking, swimming, etc. We’re in top form, with glowing sun soaked skin, and our calendars are reminiscent of a young starlit, booked with rooftop happy hours, restaurant outings, and long weekends.

Except of course when it’s not!

Commercial after commercial tells us this is our time in the proverbial sun…to be merry and launching cannonballs into glistening pools with friends laughing on, to essentially be “living the life” before Old Man Winter rears his head again.

For some however, this time of year is a time for self discovery…you know the “I’m taking the summer to find myself” time. Every July and August, life slows down a little and you have the time to perch under a tree, and ponder your future.

Which sounds great, until well, your search comes up empty. Or at least that’s what you think.
We all fall into these ruts time and again, when we think our life is like a summer day…long, hot, unbearable and leading us nowhere. You may not be in the job you want, and the slowness of the summer exacerbates your restlessness. Your summer fling may be more of a “sting” but you’re too scared to head into colder months alone, or everyone around you seems to be in the fast lane, and you’re still riding a tricycle, and the list goes on and on.

Your life, however, is what you choose to make of it! So, in the words of my dear mother “SNAP OUT OF IT”! Don’t let “Debbie downer” thoughts tell you that you have to settle. What we learned in 7th grade science class still remains true today: for every action there is an opposite and equal reaction i.e. you are going to get out of your life what you put into it. You can’t complain about your job and then never look for a new one, or sharpen the skills necessary to get the job of your dreams. You can’t keep treating yourself like a doormat and then expect someone else to treat you like a queen or king…you get the picture!

The key to forward movement is just that, beginning to move forward one step at a time. No one is saying that your life is going to change within in a season. But what is true, is that doing nothing won’t produce the results you want either. Trust me I know. Sitting around watching Sex and the City reruns doesn’t make my life any more glamorous, but going out and meeting new people and trying new venues can.

The life you want is out there, but if you stay on the couch and keep expecting it to come knocking on your door then you’re going to waiting a loooong time!

So, go on, get up. Splash some cold water on your face and put on those fantastic espadrilles that are hiding in the back of your closet. Slap on a smile, open the door and go after the life that you want!
